BERT - Boundless Electrical Resistivity Tomography

This page is for one of our most important products: The DC resistivity inversion on unstructured meshes. It was recently described in our GJI paper and provides DC resistivity inversion on ANY geometry. This can be 2D as well as 3D, with or without topography, closed or open domains, with holes, fixed areas or whatever.

The program is controlled by a configuration file holding the options. A shell program calls different applications in DCFemLib as mesh generation, modelling and inversion. Out of DCFemLib and DCMatLab we branched a GUI for inversion on closed 2d geometries, called DC2dTree. Recently, we completely migrated the whole system to be run under Windows. Next step is adding an interactive GUI using Python or Matlab.


The scheme

The topography is used to create the meshes, on the primary mesh the primary potentials are calculated and used to determine the geometric factors yielding the apparent resistivities and the sensitivities. The inversion itself affects the resistivities of the parameter mesh, the forward calculation is carried out on the secondary mesh.

BERT 1.0 released

After many years, BERT has reached 1.0 stage, i.e. it is ready for the production mode.
It is available for Linux and Windows platforms.
For detailed usage see the Tutorial. Briefly:
prepare: bring files to unified data format
for data with topography we suggest read and process with DC2dInvRes or DC3dInvRes and export as ohm-File
create a configuration file, for a new project use the commands invertNew2d,invertNew2dTopo,invertNew3d,invertNew3dTopo and redirect the output to a cfg file, which will include the possible options for this case

Tools and programms for displaying results:

Tutorial and examples

We wrote a Tutorial that explans on the full variety of different data and geometries how to work with BERT.

All discussed examples are part of the distribution (under examples/inversion) so that the user can work with it.
